HI! I’m Julie.
Welcome to my blog, what I am affectionately calling “Mood Over Matter”! I’m a mother of three, baker-turned-author who developed a love for writing fiction late in life and still doesn’t know what she wants to be when she grows up.
Reading has been my off and on pastime over the years, and after a few disappointing reads I decided to try my hand at writing. How hard can that be?
my early writing process
Turns out, harder than I thought, but it’s been an incredible journey through what feels like a whole new sub-culture. Kinda like exploring a new genre of literature!
I’ve discovered:
Amazing online resources like podcasts, online communities, and youtube channels devoted to the craft.
Amazing authors. (why do I even bother trying to write?)
After about two years of writing consistently on a story, I finally felt ready to submit for publication. After months of querying and rejections, I finally heard from a publisher and am on the road to publication!
And guess what? I am realizing my story still needs a lot ot work!! But that’s okay - I’m working steadily on getting my book just that much better for publication, and I’ve learned so much in the process.
Writing has been a journey of self-discovery and has opened my eyes to a whole new craft - one that is thriving, exciting, and always changing. There is something new to learn everyday!
I’ll share more about the actual book itself in the coming weeks, but for now, let me share a little more about my writing style in general.
late night (past 9 p.m.) writing…
I always come back to stories with a fictional - sometimes fanciful - world because they are the most disassociated from reality. When I need a break from life, I mean a break from life.
Because I’m a hopeless romantic, there is always some romantic plot. Sometimes it’s the main plot but sometimes it’s a strong sub-plot - we’ll wait and see where the journey takes us, shall we?
Oh, I should also specify CLEAN ROMANCE. Will there be a smattering of curse words here and there that we have all thought, said, or at least heard before? Sure…I’m an imperfect human writing about imperfect humans (at least mostly always human ;). Will there be some heart-throbby-will-they-finally-kiss moments? Yes…but nothing explicit. (Side Note: Can you imagine writing scenes like THOSE that my PARENTS may read?! And what about my KIDS someday?! )
Moving on…I also like reading books that make me laugh as I can find humor in most situations. Which isn’t always a great thing - I often laugh at some very inappropriate times! (No judging - it’s my coping mechanism.) So generally my books will have subtle wit and humor woven throughout.
My heroes and heroines often discover secret powers, hide behind noms-de-plume, or try to run from their responsibility that will surely take them out of their comfort zone. I wantonly thrust them into misadventures - either from their own rash choices or as a result of a devastating external conflict.
But don’t worry - readers are safe with me. I firmly believe in a happily ever after - or at least, a happy for now. (There’s plenty of real-world horror for us to feel sad about, am I right?!)
I hope my work helps you escape reality for a time so that you can come back encouraged, inspired, and ready to seize new opportunities.
